This module will help to: 1. Understand the major influences on the development of Rizal’s values and consciousness; 2. Identify the different events during the 19th century and corresponding ideas encountered by Rizal which later on manifested in his works and Filipino nationalistic movements; 3. Assess the importance of one’s influences in the formation of one’s character and idealism.

Module 3: Rizal the Hero and Nationalist

In this module, you will learn about Rizal’s core philosophy on education as a non-violent revolutionary tool for social change. You will analyze his complex relationship with the 1896 Philippine Revolution, exploring the debate between reform and separation, and examine the controversial Retraction issue to understand its impact on his legacy. Lastly, you will study his seminal essays, such as "The Indolence of the Filipinos," to see how he gifted the natives with a unified national identity and defined what it truly means to be a "Filipino by heart." This module will help to: 1. Analyze Rizal’s writings and life experiences to define his philosophy on education as the primary catalyst for national liberation and social reform; 2. Critically evaluate the historical debates regarding Rizal’s stance on the 1896 Revolution and the retraction controversy to assess their lasting significance on his heroism; 3. Synthesize Rizal’s concepts of national identity and "collective sentiment" to foster a proactive and meaningful commitment to contemporary nation-building.
